Ghats
Assi ghat
:Assi is
one of the important ghats situated in the south, at the sangam
of Ganga and Assi. The Assi is described as dried stream in
purnic literature. The temple of Jagannatha (One of the Char
Dham Yatra) lies close to the old route of the Assi River. The
Kashi Khanda says, "All the other tirthas that girdle the earth
are not equal to a sixteenth part of the tirthas at Assi
confluence ". This is one of the famous sites for celebrating
Surya Sasthi (" The six day of the sun" as mother goddess)
festival held on fifth and sixth light-half forte night of the
Kartika month (Oct.-Nov.)
Ganga Mahal Ghat
:This is in fact an extended
part of the assi ghat and the palatial house there was made in
c. 1830 by the patronage of the Maharaja of Banaras.
Rivan Ghat
:Like the preceding one this
is also an extended part of the assi ghat and was patronized by
the maharaja of vivan in c. 1879 with making a palace. It has
two parts: the palatial building and an auxiliary building –
earlier it was referred as the lala misra ghat
Tulsi ghat
:This was part of
an old ghat named lolark, but this become famous with it
association to Tulsi (C.E 1547-1623), the great bhakta poet who
wrote the Ramcharit Manas. It is
Bhadaini Ghat
:This ghat is referred in
gahadavala inscription (c. 1100) and also in a mid-17th
century text. Presently this ghat is over captured by the
waterworks buildings and was made pucca by the municipal
corporation in 1907. Lolarka ("trembling sun") is one of the
most an cient sacred sites in varanasi (KKh 46) historically
lolarka's importance can be traced with the patronage of
gahadavala kings who bathed there, worshipped and made
charitable donations (Eck 1982: 177).
Janaki ghat
:This is a sixth
ghat named after the queen of sursund state.
Anandamayi ghat
:This ghat is
named after mother anandmayi. The ashram of the holy mother
anandmayi, its attached hospital and beautiful temple are at the
top of the ghat.
Vaccharaja ghat
:Closed by site
is a berth place of suparsvanapha, the seventh Jain tirthankara
that is why the neighborhood is dominated by the Jain.
Jain ghat
:This is an
extended part of preceding ghat. There are two Jain temples at
the top.
Nisadaraja ghat
:A large number of
boatmen with their small boats and nets can be seen here. Nisad
was mythical hero of fisherman of the ramayan who name is
honored in this way here.
Pancakota ghat
:This ghat was made
by raja panchkoat of Madhya Pradesh in 1915.
Prabhu ghat
:This was made
nirmal Kumar, a rich merchant.
Chet Singh ghat
:This ghat has
historical importance and named after raja Chet Singh. There is
a fort attached to this ghat which is witness of the fierce
battle between the troops of warren Hastings and Chet Singh.
Niranjani ghat
:This has
historical connection to king kumorgutpa-1, who was devotee of
lord kartikeya, the second son of lord Shiva, the god of war,
there exit kartikeya temple in the compound of niranajani akhara
and gauri kund. |
