Vindhyachal
Vindhyachal is a
Shaktipeeth, an ancient pilgrimage dedicated to the Mother
Goddess. Mentioned in the Puranas, it is situated 8 kms from
Mirzapur, a major carpet weaving centre. It is dotted with
temples, the most famous being the one dedicated to
Vindhyavasini Devi. Pilgrims crowd the temple during the
Navaratras in the months of Chaitra (spring) and Ashwin
(autumn). Among the other important shrines dedicated to the
Mother Goddess are the Ashtabhuja Temple, Sita Kund and Kali
Khoh. Vindhyachal is accessible by road and rail from
Varanasi. As the nearest town, Mirzapur has many hotels and
as Vindhyachal is a pilgrimage there are many dharmashalas
here. Shop at Mirzapur for hand-knotted carpets, terracotta
and
metalware. |
