Pandava brothers, heroes of the epic Mahabharata. Situated
by the banks of the Yamuna river, it was the capital of King
Udaya who was a contemporary of Gautama Buddha. Now it is a
part of the Buddhist circuit as Lord Buddha visited it in
the sixth and ninth year after his Enlightenment. Here he
delivered several sermons and important discourses to his
followers and Kaushambi became a centre of Buddhist
learning. It has the ruins of an ancient fortress, the
remains of an Ashokan pillar and the Ghositaram Monastery.
Archaeological excavations here have yielded many Mauryan
period coins, stone and terracotta sculptures that are now
housed at the Archaeological Museum in Allahabad, 58 kms
